Hyperscale tech corporations are spending billions to plant data centers across the country and Spokane County is in their sights. They want our land. They need our water. They need our power. Plus tax breaks while they take it. Promised jobs never materialize. The utility bills go up. The water table goes down. We pay. They profit.
The Spokane City Council recently passed an emergency moratorium on new large data centers within city limits. The reason: Avista, the utility that powers Eastern Washington, received an approach from an unnamed corporation seeking up to 500 megawatts of electricity, equal to half the power used by every home and business in Spokane County. That is not a rumor. It is a matter of public record, disclosed to federal securities regulators. The city now has a one year pause to figure out what it wants to do. The county has no such protection. The County Commissioner controls zoning, permitting, and tax abatements in unincorporated Spokane County, and that is exactly where a corporation blocked from the city will look next.
